Speaker, Veterinarian, Author Sonja Olson

Dr. Sonja Olson grew up in Maryland, USA. She graduated from Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine with a focus on exotic animal and conservation medicine. Her professional path led to over 25 years of practicing clinical small animal and exotic emergency medicine. Her professional journey included formal teaching and mentorship of other veterinary professionals. Despite her best efforts to stay holistically healthy along the way, burnout and the physiologic impacts of that difficult work caught up with her. This lived wisdom, combined with the intentional seeking of evidence-based mental health/well-being skills and certifications, have fortified her resolve to offer care and support for those in the veterinary field. Today, Sonja lives in Vancouver, WA and her current full-time role is as Veterinary Wellness Educator & Coach for her own business, Heartstorming Wellness LLC. Through her innovative 1:1 'heartstorming sessions,' keynote presentations, and resilience-focused writings, she shares practical tools to manage change, enhance self-awareness, and foster meaningful connections. She specializes in helping individuals and teams within the veterinary field navigate stress, find balance, and cultivate emotional well-being. Combining evidence-based coaching, mindfulness, and her clinical expertise, Dr. Olson creates compassionate, transformative spaces that empower her clients to thrive both personally and professionally.

Past Attendee Testimonials

"Would definitely recommend..."

Dr. Christy Skoglund (Veterinarian)

"Dr. Hawley and Renee were awesome in their presentation to us. I learned so much and got inspired to change my ways. Would definitely recommend it to any veterinary (or non-veterinary) professional. Grateful that they are helping our community - thank you! I look forward to practicing what you taught us."

"Seriously, you're amazing!"

Shannon N. (anesthesia/surgical technician)

“Seriously, you're amazing. I think all of vet med needs to hear this content right now.”

"Thank you so much for sharing your story."

Dr. Lara Berland (Veterinarian)

“Thank you so much for sharing your story. I think the idea that we can't delegate our own wellbeing is the most important part. As vets we are calling on the public to be more respectful/appreciative/etc which is important but it is more important that we start with our own inner happiness first.

"Your purpose is clear..."

Melody Martinez (CVT)

“I'm so glad you're here Dr. Hawley. We need your voice to help guide so many of our peers out of those dark spaces. Your purpose is clear. Thank you.”

"You just made my work day 10x better..."

Brandy Kerr (Veterinary Diagnostics Technician)

“You just made my work day 10x better today. Thank you! Was listening while doing labs and felt much more chill than usual lol. I'm recommending this talk to my boss, she's a practicing vet and owner and also her own practice manager right now so she has severe burnout and needs this hardcore. My boss talks about the suicide epidemic in vets often and it's so messed up, thank you for doing talks like this to try and fight back against that 🧡🧡”

"... completely captivated everybody in the room..."

Elizabeth C. (Texas A&M VBMA Past President)

“Dr. Hawley had the unlucky speaking time of 10 am on a Saturday, but he completely captivated everybody in the room. He was very positive, energetic, and gave an easy to follow message with some key points to take. His talk wasn't overwhelming with statistics and information. He made it very practical by breaking things down and telling stories about himself and his colleagues. I definitely recommend for an upbeat, positive experience.”

"I am so appreciative..."

Rachel Stephensen (DVM)

“Circumstances the same, but so many similarities in my life. I am so appreciative that you are able to articulate this so well for us!”

"I wanted to thank you and Renee so much for two incredible presentations..."

Colleen R. (UGA VBMA Past Vice President)

“I wanted to thank you and Renee so much for two incredible presentations today. You guys are fabulous and really got students thinking about their wellbeing (especially the 1st years as they have no idea what is coming for them)! Thank you both for sharing your stories, as so many of us have our different paths taken in Vetmed...and most of them have been quite the "scenic routes". I will definitely be starting you guys’ podcast and joining the Get MotiVeted community and facebook group.”

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Are the sessions RACE approved?

Some are, and some aren't. At this time, we currently have 8.5 hours of RACE-approved content!

  • Do I have to attend the entire event to get the RACE credits?

You do NOT need to attend all of the lectures. You can attend whichever lectures you want. For the RACE-approved talks, you WILL need to attend the entire session in order to receive RACE credits for that session.

  • Past wellbeing talks I've been to have focused on things like eating healthy, working out, yoga, taking more vacation, and going to the spa as the best strategies for having wellbeing. Is that what this event will cover?

While all of those strategies are (or can be) good things to do for your wellbeing, we recognize that there is far more to beating burnout and maximizing wellbeing. Therefore, the focus of our content will NOT be on things like exercise, diet, yoga, vacation, and going to the spa. Though, a vacation and a massage does sound super good right now! lol

  • What is the price per ticket?

The normal price is $297/ticket. However, we are doing awesome sale prices for our early bird special for as little as $67/ticket! We only have a limited number of these. We also have payment options, where you can split up your payment so that you can secure your seat without hurting your pockets!

  • Is there a refund policy?

Yes! You can secure a refund up until 7 days AFTER the event! That way, if you think the event sucks, you can get your money back! No buyer's remorse allowed (we've all been there before where you spend money and wish you hadn't)! We're sure you'll find value in the summit, but in case you don't -> no worries!

  • Who are the speakers?

The main speakers and hosts of the event will be Dr. Quincy Hawley, Renee Machel, and Dr. Barry Feldman. We will be announcing the other speakers over the next couple of months!

  • Can we buy bulk tickets? Is there a hospital rate?

Yes and Yes! For teams up to 20 people, you can get access to the conference and the bonuses for a single payment of $997. For multiple teams, teams greater than 20 members, if you need to buy more than 20 tickets, or if you want to split the payments, please email us [email protected] for custom pricing.

Our "Why" for Creating this Event

Simply put, ALL members of the veterinary community matter!

Yes! You Matter! Your wellbeing matters just as much as the pets we take an oath to serve!

Ever since we began sharing our stories of overcoming burnout, there have been people in our audiences who have come forward to express their gratitude, share their own struggles, and even share their wellbeing triumphs! This is what we LOVE! The summit will allow this on an even greater scale! We're pumped!

Some people who attend our talks or take our courses even say that our message has helped them to stay in vet med! That is fantastic!

Like you, we are veterinary professionals with over 30 years of combined experience in vet med, so we understand the challenges (and the awesomeness of making a difference in the lives of animals)!

However, we are HUMANS FIRST! Yet, so few of us have any training whatsoever in keeping our minds healthy and well! In a provocative environment like vet med where - let's face it - there are unique challenges, this can and typically does take a major toll on us physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Unfortunately, we had to learn through the School of Hard Knocks (where we earned our "PHDs = Pain, Hell, and Disaster lol) that if you're good at vet med but not so good at "human-ing" (our made-up word for thriving as a human 😂) then you can have a bad time in vet med, even though this is truly the career you were meant for!

We deeply believe the subjects of burnout preparedness and wellbeing are vitally important, and it's something we want everyone to have access to, hence this super affordable global summit that anyone can attend.

Ultimately, if we don't take care of our own wellbeing as humans and vet professionals, then we will continue to lose members of the veterinary community to other fields of work or worse.

Therefore, it's up to each and every one of us to do all that we can to protect our wellbeing so that we can continue to serve our patients and society in the best ways possible!

We've Spoken on the Subjects of Burnout and Wellbeing to Many Groups and in Many Places!

And now after giving over 300 talks, we can't wait to speak to you at the 2025 Veterinary Burnout Preparedness Summit of the Year!

We love speaking at conferences, universities, and in veterinary hospitals.

However, a major reason we are creating the summit, is that we wanted to allow people from all over the world to have access to this impactful material without having to fly us out to their locations!

While we LOVE speaking and presenting via in-person delivery, we also find a ton of enjoyment in virtual presentations!

A Final Message From Our Company Leaders...

What role will YOU play?

As veterinary professionals it is our duty and yours to at least provide the resources and support for ourselves that will ensure that we are well, so that we can treat pets and serve clients in the best ways possible, which means we are fulfilling our purposes as veterinary professionals and humans!

This is YOUR profession, and while it has room for improvement, vet med is still really awesome!

It's even MORE awesome when you have the blueprints, tools, and resources to navigate the unavoidable challenges associated with personal and professional life!

Give yourself permission to invest in yourself by attending the Burnout Preparedness Summit so that you can thrive despite the challenges thrown your way!

Thank you in advance for investing in yourself!

Don’t be afraid to call, text, or email us if you need anything as it relates to wellbeing!

We’d love to hear your story and provide support where we can!

Our Best,
